Sweeping ocean vistas, a warm patio, a comfortable place to wonder and wander...

Welcome to Casa de Candaele, a solar-run two bedroom house located along the stunning coastline 15 miles south of Ensenada in northern Baja California (Please check the web if you don’t know the exact location). This is a hand-crafted house in many of its details, such as the cracked mosaic in the front entrance. Please come in and learn more about the house and the surrounding area.

A 15 foot high ceiling gives the living room a spacious feel, with six windows and French doors that open out to the patio and face the ocean, giving you an stunning view inside and out. A wood-burning cast-iron stove made in the 1840s provides the heat for the house (wood is included), and the couch is a foldout bed for two. There is a small radio/Cassette/CD player and a collection of music. You’re welcome to read the variety of books on Baja and Mexican history left for guests, but please leave them behind. Thanks.

A beautifully tiled bar separates the living room from the kitchen, a spot for breakfast or late night card games or dominos. The kitchen comes equipped with pots and pans, utensils, plates, glasses coffee maker, a brand new refrigerator and refurbished stove/oven. But since the house is solar-powered, there are no micro-wave or electric items—they simply use too much power. Everything runs on gas.

The tiled patio is warm and inviting, and the spot where you will no doubt spend most of your time during your stay. An outside table allows for morning breakfast or afternoon lunch, and the patio chairs are made for lounging and sunning. There are also two barbeques (briquets not included) for your favorite meat or vegetable dish. You might want to bring your yoga mat for a good stretch overlooking the wrap-around ocean view. The place is quiet and serene, so you won’t be bothered by car noise or neighbors, and the days go by at a lazy relaxing pace.

A wood deck and stairway leads down to the Bocci court. If you don’t know the Italian game of bocci, do look it up on line. You’ll have endless fun learning and playing one of the more popular games in Europe. Take your margaritas and enjoy the game, either one on one or played by pairs.

There are two bedrooms with full beds, lights for late night reading. Please bring your own linens—sheets, pillow cases. Blankets are provided, but if you like to sleep hot bring your favorite extra blanket.

Each bedroom has its own bathroom with hot showers. Bring your own shampoo and soap if you don’t want to use what is there. No hairdryers please; they pull too much power. And remember, since the water is not drinkable, always brush your teeth with good drinking water. Toilet paper is, of course, there for your use, but if you prefer your favorite brand do bring it.

There are many activities for adults and children in the area. Besides beaches, hiking and biking, there are local fishing outfits near by as well as horseback riding, swimming in the summer months at a local pool a few miles away, and the wine country of Baja is 15 miles south along the main highway of Baja. There is also the tourist attraction of La Bufadora (a sea-water blow hole), where one may eat and shop along a half mile-long street filled with different Mexican-made goods.

Other information about the house: Again the house is solar run and is off the grid, which means there is no television or telephone, so one must be ready to relax in an environment that is free from the typical at home distractions. Cell phones with international access will work in Mexico, and there are local phones as well. There is also a local Laundromat a few miles away where you may take your clothes and retrieve them the next day. You MUST BRING YOUR OWN DRINKING WATER or get drinking water locally at the market near the house. There are small markets for food, but you might consider bringing your own food and drink from the U.S., since you may not find all that you want in Mexico. Finally, as you will see from the photos, the house is not sitting on the beach, but rather is up off the water. You can hike or drive to local beaches, but the house is overlooking the ocean, not right on it.

Rates: The house rents for $100 a night for 2 people, $130 a night for 4 people,
and $150 a night for 5 or more.
